Facts about Sea Lions
Posted On: 04-20-2018
Sea Lions are fascinating creatures, which is why America’s Family Pet Expo is happy to feature the Sea Lion Splash Show at the 2018 Expo April 27-29! These intelligent and amusing animals can balance balls, shoot hoops, dance, shake their flippers, and even do a handstand or two. You won’t want to miss this feature of America’s Family Pet Expo as it will be both entertaining and educational!
- Sea lions can see underwater because they have a reflective membrane at the back of the eye that acts like a mirror, bouncing the little light they find in the ocean back through the eye a second time.
- A sea lion can typically remain underwater for 10 to 20 minutes at a time.
- While swimming, sea lions can reach speeds of 18 miles per hour in the water, but only for a short time.
- Sea Lions use their whiskers to help them navigate the dark ocean waters. Each long whisker, called a vibrissa, rotates around with the underwater currents, allowing the sea lion to “feel” any creatures swimming nearby.
