It’s Pet Dental Health Month and we at America’s Family Pet Expo want to give you a few tips so you and your pet can properly celebrate and enjoy good dental health in the years to come.
If you haven’t taken your pet to the veterinarian for a dental exam in a while, schedule one today! Your pet should have an annual checkup that includes a dental exam. But if you think your pet is having problems, don’t wait until your next appointment to get it checked out. If periodontal disease is left untreated, it may lead to other health problems.
If you do not currently have a dental care routine, you need to start one! Ask your veterinarian for the best options for your pet. Brushing your pet’s teeth is a viable option, but be sure to use toothpaste and a toothbrush that are appropriate. Human toothpaste is not recommended as it may upset your pet’s stomach and toothbrush bristles should be ultra soft to avoid hurting its gums.
A complete home dental care routine may also include special pet food that helps care for your pet’s teeth while he or she eats. Chew toys can also help your pet have a happy, healthy smile. Again, be sure to consult your veterinarian to find the best plan for your pet.
How do you preserve your pet’s dental hygiene? Visit our Facebook page and let us know! And if you are ready to purchase some new toys and check out some new food that will fit into your pets dental care routine, be sure to come to America’s Family Pet Expo April 20-22!
